For many of us, the Christmas period is about spending time with loved ones and reflecting upon what we have to be thankful for. But what about those who have no one to turn to for help and support – no partner, family or close friends? That’s the reality for more than 2.5 million older people in the UK. Who will be there for them this Christmas?
That's where Age UK come in. We're determined to be there for older people whenever they need us. Life doesn't stop during the festive period and neither do we.
Thanks to the Age UK Advice Line, we’re here 365 days a year — even on Christmas Day — to assist vulnerable older people in a crisis, whatever they may need.
Whether that's providing clear, practical information that helps them make the right choices for them, or providing an understanding ear and a reassuring voice to someone dealing with a bereavement and the feelings of confusion, loss and loneliness that can bring.
That’s what happened to Colin, who felt his world had ended when he lost his wife. He called the Age UK Advice Line, and the adviser he spoke to sensed he was at a low ebb, desperate to speak to someone.
Thankfully, the adviser then referred Colin to Call in Time, Age UK's telephone befriending service, which matched him with a friendly volunteer for a weekly chat.
Being there for people like Colin wouldn’t be possible without donations from people like you. Let’s be there for the older people who need us this Christmas – and beyond.
Age UK provides a range of services and your gift will go wherever the need is greatest.
